How can counselling help?

Counselling can help when you have encountered a difficulty in your life that you cannot solve on your own and when turning to family and friends is not an option.  A counsellor can help you generate a new perspective or guide you in the direction of a solution. 

 

What are common issues that individuals seek counselling for?

Depression, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, changes in mood, stress, insomnia, panic, anger, low self-esteem, feelings of loneliness, trauma, obsessive thoughts, grief and loss, family conflict, couple conflict, interpersonal difficulties, and adjustment difficulties

What about medication versus counselling?

It is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved medication alone.  Instead of just treating the symptoms, counselling addresses the causes of your distress and the behavioral patterns that exacerbate it.  In some cases, a combination of medication and therapy may be the right course of action


What type of counselling services does CMWCA offer?

CMWCA offers low fee service for those seeking help.  The organization enlists competent counsellors who are passionate about giving back to the community. The following are the proposed fees:

Individual counselling-$80/hr

Couples/family counselling-$110/1.5hr

Group counselling-$40/1.5 hr


Do you take insurance and how does it work?

To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first thing you should do is contact them. The following are some helpful questions you can ask them:

-What are my mental health benefits?

-What is the coverage amount per therapy session?                         

-How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?

-Is approval required from my family physician?

How does counselling work? 

Counselling is a process; it has a beginning, middle, and an end.  It is absolutely confidential. The process begins with the client and counsellor getting to know each other and establishing a therapeutic relationship.  It then moves towards identifying the problematic issue(s), establishing goals, and agreeing on a treatment plan.  As the treatment plan is carried out, progress will be assessed periodically. Termination of counselling depends on the client or whether the counsellor feels there is a better, alternative solution to the client’s problems.  Depending on the issue, counselling can be short-term or long-term.  Short-term counselling ranges from a couple to six sessions, whereas long-term counselling can last up to years.
